In February 2025, Bill Gates will release his memoir, Source Code, and all author proceeds will be donated to United Way Worldwide (UWW) as unrestricted funds. UWW was recognized in the information shared with media about yesterday’s public announcement.
United Way holds special meaning to Bill and his mother, Mary M. Gates. For more than a decade, Mary was a committed United Way volunteer who served as a board member of United Way of King County in Seattle and United Way International. In recognition of Mary’s vast contributions to our organization, UWW’s Mary M. Gates Learning Center is named in her honor.
Last month, I attended Microsoft’s CEO Summit and spent time with Bill Gates sharing details about the transformational work currently taking place at United Ways around the globe, especially our revenue diversification efforts and recent $2 billion Environmental Protection Agency grant, which he thought was impressive. There continues to be strong alignment between the philanthropic interests of the Gates family and United Way’s capacity to scale impact. The confidence in United Way to effectively steward these resources is a reflection of our organizational strategy and commitment to be an impactful, relevant, and sustainable resource for the communities we serve.
